Earlybirds launches new snack drink

Earlybirds has launched its first products – a nutritious snack or breakfast drink made from fresh ingredients, with no added sugar, is high-in-fibre and is packaged in a compostable bottle.

Available in two flavours: Berry Bircher and Mango & Oats (RRP £2.25/ bottle), Earlybirds aims to “make mornings easier” by providing healthy and convenient solutions to breakfast/snacking while minimising the environmental impact with a compostable bottle made from sugarcane.

Founder Amrit Hathiramanim had the idea for Earlybirds when he struggled to fit breakfast into his busy lifestyle. He knew that there would be other people who also needed an on the go solution.

“In a market that is so full of innovation, it’s very difficult to stand out,” said Hathiramanim.

“At Earlybirds we are committed to being as innovative as possible for the time poor, health conscious consumers we aspire to please, both with the products we create and the packaging we use. We’ve stripped back our brand design to be sleek and easy to understand at a glance, ensuring it can cut through all the noise”.

With a compostable bottle made from sugarcane and a recyclable lid, sustainability is extremely important for Earlybirds. By October 2019 Earlybirds will roll out a sugarcane lid; making the packaging 100% made from plants.

Earlybirds is available to purchase online at https://earlybirds.co/ and will be launching in selected Sainsbury’s stores on 19 August 2019.

It’s all gold for Ferrero

Acrobats put on a stunning display

The Ferrero Group unveiled its products for Christmas 2019 at a (literally) glittering launch event at London’s Café de Paris last week.

A dazzling and opulent event space, Café de Paris never fails to leave a lasting impression, and it was a little surreal walking into such a glam venue at 11am on a Thursday morning. Down on the floor, preparations were being made for the morning’s entertainment, and judging by the hoop being suspended from the ceiling, we were in for a treat indeed!

Following a spectacular display from acrobats, fitting with this years theme of ‘the Greatest Show by Ferrero’, performing death-defying feats of strength and skill (I don’t think I breathed during the whole thing), we got down to business.

As Levi Boorer, customer development director at Ferrero, said: “Christmas is a key seasonal trading spike for the confectionery category. Ferrero’s diverse portfolio contains a number of best-selling, quality brands that help to drive category growth, offering shoppers great tasting products to gift and share during the Christmas period.”

Following a dramatic performance, a group of light-up drummers drew back the curtains to reveal all of the new products across Ferrero’s brands this season, including novelties, figures and advent calendars.

Following strong sales last year (+14.2%), Thorntons is expanding its Continental selection with a Continental Winter Markets box (273g RRP £9.68) containing six new flavours “that represent rich and evocative flavours from every corner of Europe”, including Italian Panforte, Dutch Speculoos and Clementine Caramel.

The Thorntons Snowflake collection (160g RRP £5.38) will feature two new flavours, including Salted Caramel Snowflake and Burnt Sugar Snowflake, while Raffaello will be launching a new “giftable” 100g round box with a decorative bow (RRP £4.25).

After the launch of The Cheeky Elf figure last year, Thorntons is adding The Snowy Bear (200g) to its range of figures, while also updating its Cheeky Reindeer (200g). The Cheeky Elf character will also be available as a small “self-treat” product (29g RRP £0.75) in four different designs.

Nutella will bring back its seasonal packaging across all four jar sizes, and introduces a gifting trio-pack (3 x 30g jars RRP £3.20)

Christmas 2019 will see Kinder add the Kinder Mix Reindeer Headband (167g RRP £7.00) to its seasonal range, while the Kinder Surprise Egg 100g will feature new Polar Bear toys with “great playability”, including water-shooting and colour-changing features. Kinder Joy will also return this Christmas with new festive designs.

Kinder has added the Kinder Mix Hexagon (152g RRP £5.50) and the Kinder & Love (37g RRP £1.80), which is “a perfect self-treat or stocking filler item… and can be turned into a decoration to help shoppers spread the festive cheer around their home”.

And that’s just the Christmas new releases, phew! Ferrero also has a raft of year-round NPD so keep an eye out on the site for news on those.

“By tapping into the growing trend for yoghurt-coated treats we want to provide a more premium, indulgent experience for the consumer and give retailers another great opportunity to grow the category.”

Raw Halo gets new flavours and a new look

For 2019, Raw Halo chocolate is launching a vibrant new look and recyclable, plastic-free packaging, along with new flavours, formats and listings in Waitrose, Ocado and Holland & Barrett.

Raw Halo is a vegan, raw chocolate brand founded in 2015. All its products are made from ethically sourced, plant-based ingredients, sweetened with coconut sugar and sustainably wrapped. Unlike conventional chocolate, Raw Halo’s cacao beans aren’t roasted; instead, through careful temperature control, the raw cacao is minimally processed to retain the nutrients and flavour of the original cacao beans.

The range is now available in seven Dark and three Mylk varieties in three sizes to suit all occasions: as a 22g everyday indulgence, a 35g single-serve snack bar and a 70g sharing bar.

New to the range are an 85% Dark Chocolate, Dark & Raspberry, and Dark & Himalayan Pink Salt, with salt crystals that enhance the lightly sweetened chocolate. Its Mylk & Vanilla, Mylk & Salted Caramel and Dark & Mint bars are now available in all three size formats.

Raw Halo sources its ingredients from small, organic farms that trade their product for a fair price and treat their communities well. They produce the chocolate in partnership with a social enterprise; a chocolate factory that helps its staff reach their full potential. Raw Halo’s packaging is 100% sustainable and recyclable and entirely plastic free.

2019 also sees the launch of a new partnership with One Tree Planted: Raw Halo will plant one tree in Peru or Indonesia for every fifty bars sold, aiming to plant over 20,000 trees in the coming 12 months.

Co-founder, Meg Haggar said: “At Raw Halo, we believe in everyday luxuries that benefit mind, body and spirit. That’s why our chocolate is designed to be better in every sense, for you and the planet. We’ve created a luxury chocolate bar that’s healthier, more natural and better quality, making better-made and better-for-you the new benchmark for premium chocolate.”

Stockists include rawhalo.com, Waitrose, Ocado, Holland & Barrett, Harrods, Whole Foods, As Nature Intended, Planet Organic and Daylesford’s, as well as delis, health food stores and cafés nationwide.

22g RRP £1.10; 35g RRP £1.99; 70g RRP £2.99.

Moo Free reformulates its free from pralines

Moo Free has re-formulated its dairy free “milk” chocolate pralines as, according to EU laws, they are not actually pralines.

To make the pralines free-from, Moo Free replaced the milk powder with a combination of rice flour and rice starch. But, according to the EU, chocolate cannot contain flour or starch so Moo Free’s product couldn’t be called ‘chocolate’. The EU also states that a praline must be coated with chocolate, so, Moo Free’s pralines can’t be pralines.

To combat the name rules, Moo Free created free-from Hazelnut Truffles that look and taste just like milk chocolate pralines.

Moo Free’s Hazelnut Truffles are completely dairy-free, gluten-free, soya-free and certified vegan. They are made using UTZ certified cocoa which helps to support sustainable farming and provides better opportunities for farmers, their families and our planet.

The outer packaging is carboard with an inner tray that is made using recycled plastic that is fully recyclable again.

With an RRP of £4.99 they can be found in Waitrose and online at www.dairyfreechocolates.com.

Global confectionery talent celebrated at the Academy of Chocolate Awards

This week saw the 2019 Academy of Chocolate Awards staged at Claridge’s in London, where a host of confectionery talent gathered eagerly to awaited the results of months worth of painstaking judging.

Confectionery Production was once again very pleased to be involved in the process, with the ‘blind tasting’ sessions offering up a complete spectrum of entrants – ranging from those that attempted some extremely complex flavours, through to some rare cocoa sources from around the world that offered up some genuine surprises in terms of their undoubted quality.

Speaking to a number of other fellow judges, my thoughts were confirmed that it was a particularly challenging task to make a final group judgement, with a number of strong contestants this year hailing from a record total of over 40 countries.

There were dozens of accolades dispensed on the night, including the winner of the coveted ‘Golden Bean’ award, which for the first time was claimed by a dark milk bar from US-based Castronovo Chocolate, with its 63% Sierra Navada offering impressing judges across the board. It was also pleasing to see plenty of interest in the ‘rising star’ awards, which also produced a range of worthy winners.

As the academy pointed out, one of its prime aims is not only to celebrate the work of emerging and established artisans, but also provide some education to the wider public on the sheer range of chocolate options that are available out there. While it remains a shame that many of these great bars won’t make it to the mass market due to the nature of the operations behind them (often being small family-owned companies), it at the very least demonstrates that the world of chocolatiers is an incredibly fascinating one, with plenty of intriguing tales behind the delivery of these products that have been lovingly crafted by their creators.

Rebel Chocolate introduces plant-based bar

Glasgow-based chocolate maker, Rebel Chocolate, has introduced its new 100% plant-based, high-protein peanut chocolate.

Following its launches of “healthier” milk and white chocolate Rebel Chocolate has now produced a new 100% plant-based offering.

Using single origin cocoa from Colombia to ensure a massive cocoa hit, Rebel Chocolate has blended three base ingredients (cocoa, peanuts and unrefined coconut sugar) to produce a 70% dark chocolate containing 20% protein and 22% sugar.

Neil Robson, co-founder and chocolate maker said: “This chocolate is quickly gaining fame – everyone loves it! My favourite review so far has been ‘Born in Colombia and crafted to perfection in Glasgow – plant-based, dairy-free and packed with protein, it defies the received wisdom that healthiness comes at a cost to chocoholic pleasure.’ If you love peanuts, and love chocolate, then this bar is a must for you to try.”

The new chocolate is available in 30g and 90g bars from Rebel Chocolate’s website www.rebelchocolate.co.uk as well as through selected Rebel Chocolate stockists.
