Moments of 2018: Bowsette, or when Nintendo proved no-one can subvert it like itself

When I first scrolled through my Twitter feed and spied the Bowsette hashtag, I had no idea of what was to follow. What I believed to be a niche deviantart trend quickly evolved into something of a monster - kind of like Peach, really. But perhaps the most amazing thing about the phenomenon was that despite the internet's belief it was undermining Nintendo's family image, it turns out Nintendo had beaten Twitter to it all along.

Here's a quick refresh. In September, Nintendo introduced a new power-up item into New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe called the Super Crown. The (quite innocent) object is used to transform Toadette into a Princess Peach version called Peachette - but naturally, this sparked a debate amongst Nintendo fans as to how the crown actually worked. Under the assumption it could morph any character into its Peach form, cartoonist ayyk92 applied the concept to Mario lore - namely, as a way to solve Peach's continued rejection of Bowser. And just like that, Bowsette was born.

Over the course of the next few days, thousands of artists started producing their own versions of Bowsette, and various debates emerged over how she should look. Blonde or red-headed? Pale or tanned? Bowser-esque or humanoid? One of the near-unifying factors, however, was that the artwork was most definitely NSFW, which meant I got plenty of strange looks when researching it in the office.

Moments of 2018: Burnout Paradise's crash gates

Years ago I worked at a cinema with this fellow usher called Jess. Jess was amazing and wise and she worked the popcorn stand, and she worked it in a very particular way. She spent hours and hours there every day, ignoring customers and rooting through the depths of the popcorn, head bowed, a scowl of deepest concentration on her face. It was always the sweet popcorn that held her attention, and rightly so. What she was looking for was the rare, one-in-a-million piece of popcorn that had far more than its fair share of sugar on it. Most popcorn has a sort of matte, papery surface, doesn't it? But these special, over-sugared pieces looked like they had been varnished. They crunched in a different way between your teeth and there was something syrupy to them as they exploded with gritty sugar in your mouth.

What made them all the sweeter, of course, was the one-in-a-million thing. They weren't the norm. They were special. And so to my favourite gaming moment of 2018, which is probably also my favourite gaming moment of the last few years, if I'm being honest. Like a piece of over-sugared popcorn I have probably come upon it once or twice in every year since 2008.

Burnout Paradise has crash gates. These lurid yellow-green things that litter the landscape and mark the entry and exit points of shortcuts. They're like Agility Orbs in Crackdown: there's a limited number of them (400) and once you've started noticing them they become all consuming.

A Xmas Update! Dev Update #22
Past this Dev Blog: We will be omitting certain tasks people have done throughout the week in sake of spoilers! Sorry :), But over the past 2 weeks we worked to resolve, optimize and ensure performance was stable. We brought on a few new animators to help out Clara in wrapping up the gameplay animations and generally to start on cutscenes in January. We also had to let a few level designers go as they didn't have the time we were looking for, best of luck to them!

Review: Crrrunch Bites! Sea Salt Almonds

While we enjoyed the Nacho and BBQ versions of Crrrunch Bites coated almonds, thanks in part to the good flavor seasoning, that flavoring did overpower the taste of the almonds, so this version offered an opportunity to try the nice texture of rice starch-coated almonds while actually tasting the almonds. ...

Moments of 2018: Labo makes magic from cardboard

A box full of cardboard doesn't seem brilliant- not for £50, anyway. You could spend a fraction of that elsewhere and come away with enough cardboard to build a fortress. But Nintendo Labo is brilliant - deceptively so - and most people don't know the half of it.

The magic starts with the box itself. When you open it up, it's packed with stuff: game case, paraphernalia like little ropes and stickers, and a thick stack of unblemished, neatly colour-coded cardboard templates smelling of wholesomeness and begging to have their shapes popped from them. There's so much it's actually a bit daunting, especially if you're young, or with a young one.

But Labo isn't like Lego where you leaf through an inanimate booklet you'll inexplicably lose anyway. Labo comes to life on your telly or Switch screen in a jaunty and easily understandable way. It does nice little Nintendo things like telling you to take a break, or spoons on a bit of encouragement to keep you going towards the end, and it's not intrusive - you could have it on in the background quite happily. Crucially, it makes simple what can be quite complex. You'll be folding a piece over and over and over, enjoying the serene crease and crumple of the cardboard - all while completely unaware how it will become the thing you're making - and then you'll look back down and you've done it.

Moments of 2018: Skeletons from the briny depths in Sea of Thieves

Picking Sea of Thieves feels like a bit of a cheat. After all, the ever churning innards of Rare's multiplayer pirate adventure are expressly designed to generate memorable adventures. But in a year packed with wow moments (that first glimpse of Subnautica's bountiful choral reef, for one) and full-on WTF moments (why hello there, Fortnite's inter-dimensional butterfly), no other game has, for me at least, managed to create so many wonderful, lasting memories as Sea of Thieves.

So much so, in fact, that it's a bit of a struggle to narrow it down to one. If I had to choose though, it would probably be what started out as a relatively simple moment, a little bit of theatre in a game capable of far grander spectacle. It happened following Sea of Thieves' Skeleton Crews update, where, a few minutes after logging in, I found myself anchor down in the middle of nowhere, waves tossing my tiny sloop back and forth, with only the intermittent crash of water against wood to break the silence.

Suddenly, a distant horn rings out across the waves and, after a few moments of strange, uncertain calm, a ragged galleon explodes upward from the murky depths, making its presence known in a roar of rushing water and sea spray.

Moments of 2018: Getting my first PS4 Platinum in Marvel's Spider-Man

Despite being a headlong engine of triple-A entertainment, Spider-Man has no shortage of impromptu moments of wonder and welcome slivers of quietude. Insomniac's PS4-exclusive chucks a little bit of everything into its towering New York, a dazzling - often literally, if the sunset or sunrise catches the glass-skinned skyscrapers just so - simulacrum that feels near-mythic. This NYC manages to seem hyper-real even while allowing your Spidey to rather implausibly survive ricocheting off walls and (a few skill tree unlocks later) do some unnatural roly-poly charged jumps along the ground. It's not so much a sandbox game as an airbox: a crash course in physics, momentum, stickiness and gravity.

The cascade of little thrills in Spider-Man are countless: twanging yourself like a rubber band across rooftops; clonking late-arriving baddies with their own car doors; strutting along at street-level and doing high-fives with gleeful pedestrians. Any of these snapshots - from selfies on top of Stark Tower to pirouetting at speed through the gaps in exterior fire escapes - could be a standout moment in one of the most enjoyable and streamlined blockbusters of the year. In second place, I might even nominate the sweet interstitial animations where Peter Parker, having ditched the tights, prepares to re-enter his civilian life while nervously touching up his boyband haircut (because let's face it, those skintight Spidey masks have gotta be murder on your VO5 firm-hold styling gel).

Personally, my crowning Spider-Man moment was something quite carefully planned rather than accidental or happenstance. Something earned through blood, web fluid and tears. This wasn't just some chaotic emergent gameplay, it was a moment of premeditated triumph. It also necessarily came very late in the game, at a time when I was already well-versed in fleet urban traversal and a grubby veteran of every nook, cranny and alley of Insomniac's bustling model of NYC.
