Creepy new Layers of Fear 2 footage aired at PAX South

Brand new footage of horror sequel Layers of Fear 2 was aired during a panel this weekend at PAX South.

The video showed us more of the game's Titanic-like boat-at-sea setting as well as a glimpse at the creepy and surreal moments awaiting us there. We also heard a snippet of Tony Todd's voiceover - he who was once the Candyman - and yes, he's absolutely still scary.

Layers of Fear 2 moves the series from centering on art to the history of cinema, and from a mansion to an ocean liner. In the game, you play an actor struggling with past trauma while trying to prepare for the role of a lifetime. The question the game poses is: if you've given so many pieces of yourself to roles, how much of you remains?

Ace Combat 7 in VR is phenomenal (if you have the stomach for it)

I'm absolutely terrified of flying in real life. Even just stepping onto a passenger plane is an ordeal for me so the thought of piloting a jet-propelled fighter plane in real life? Well lets just say I'd have to be wearing the brown flight suit that day...

Flying in virtual reality however is a different story. The moment the wheels of my F/A-18F first left the deck of the Aircraft carrier in Ace Combat 7 and the plane took to the skies, I whooped out loud. I grit my teeth and held my breath during my first VR dog-fight. The chase was intense, twisting and turning through the air before flying into the thick clouds above us. Water droplets started forming on the glass of my cockpit and then suddenly I burst out into the clear blue skies above, the droplets turning into trickles as they quickly ran off the glass. It was at this point that I launched an air-to-air missile at my target, it thundered through the skies, connected with the fuselage of the plane in front of me and then BOOM, scratch one bogey!.

As I flew through the fiery wreckage left behind, I let out and even louder whoop. The adrenaline rush had me hooked and I hurriedly scanned the radar for my next target so I could do it all again. I don't think I'll ever forget flying through that first explosion though. The initial rush of the combat was incredible but being able to crane my neck around to watch the debris disappear into the distance brought it all to life. I might be scared of flying in the real world but up in the virtual skies? Oh my word, it's thrilling to the extreme.

This fan-made Dragon Age: Origins mod fixes 790 bugs and restores hidden dialogue, story choices, and items

While this fan-made Dragon Age: Origins patch purports to fix an impressive 790 bugs in the PC version of the RPG, that's not even the best bit; incredibly, it also restores a heap of hitherto hidden content that had been cut from BioWare's original release.

Qwinn's Ultimate DAO Fixpack (thanks, PC Gamer), currently available on Nexus Mods, has taken on the unenviable task of addressing Origins' myriad of issues. While first released in June 2017 it continues to be updated regularly, and the community modder has also poked around the inner gubbins and enabled players to run original material that, for reasons unknown - but thought to be related to "time or budget constraints" - was cut before release.

If you've yet to play and might be sensitive to Dragon Age spoilers, look away now...

Here's what's coming in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Update #4 for Xbox

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Update #4 will roll out on Xbox One on 22nd January, 2019, releasing the new snow-themed map, Vikendi, onto the public server, and brings a new vehicle, new weapons, plus "many quality of life" enhancements and bug fixes. The update also ushers in map selection - finally! - so you can select from Vikendi, Erangel, Miramar, or Sanhok, or just hit Quick Join, which'll pop you in the first available game, regardless of map.

The update also introduces Survivor Pass: Vikendi, a new event that will run for the next 10 weeks. There are two tiers available; the Survivor Pass: Vikendi is available for all players to unlock as they level-up, whilst the Premium Pass provides "special missions and exclusive rewards". Again, you'll need to level up to unlock the rewards.

Altogether, there are five mission types; daily missions - of which you'll get three a day - and weekly missions, which offers ten. But while Premium Pass holders can complete up to 10 missions per week, Survivor Pass: Vikendi players will only be able to complete up to four missions. You'll also find some beginner missions, self-described a little self-explanatorily as "easy missions which are provided for beginner players". Perhaps surprisingly, the premium missions are available for all players to participate in... although given only premium pass owners can claim any rewards from them, you'll be forgiven for giving them a miss. Finally, there are specialist challenging and advanced missions for players who've completed all their weekly missions in a specific week.

Earth Defense Force is a wonderfully scrappy series with a surprisingly dark heart

This piece contains spoilers for several Earth Defense Force games.

Earth Defense Force is what you get when you turn Starship Troopers into a series of budget video games. Each entry in the series chucks you into the titular EDF and pits you against hordes of giant insects and other strange aliens. The graphics tend to be sub-par, the art style's pretty basic, and there's nearly always bad voice acting and cheesy writing too. So what's the attraction?

It's about priorities. All of the budget and attention - all the love - goes into the things the developer really cares about. Things like destructible skyscrapers, giant purple blood splatters, completely ridiculous weapons, and more insects than you could ever hope to defeat with a thousand rolled-up newspapers. There is a certain charm to playing a game that trades graphical prowess for pure, undiluted fun. And that B-movie cheese oozing out of every line of dialogue only helps.

Your Ghost Recon Wildlands AI teammates are surprisingly good at cheating

Most video game fans know AI teammates often bend the rules when it comes to helping the player character out. But in Ubisoft's Ghost Recon Wildlands, the friendly AI gets away with some pretty outrageous cheating in order to make the player have as good a time as possible.

YouTube channel AI and Games published a fascinating video into how this all works recently, explaining the various ways your Ghost Recon Wildlands AI teammates bend the rules as you play offline.

The video is well worth a watch, but I'll highlight some of the cheats used to support the player fantasy here. For example, your teammates are invisible unless you give them a direct order, so they won't be spotted unless you tell them to shoot or move, or you're spotted yourself. This system ensures the player shouldn't blame the AI for getting spotted.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection gets "modern aiming" option

Halo: The Master Chief Collection now has "modern aiming".

This was added to the game as part of its January update after some players had complained that the aim acceleration in the Xbox One collection didn't "feel right".

The new modern aiming option, which is enabled by default, smooths out the aim acceleration zones on your controller by using values that are more like Halo 2 Anniversary and Halo 4 than the older Halo games.

Ace Combat 7: a classic series evolves with stunning visuals

Ace Combat 7 is a superb sequel to a classic franchise that succeeds because it embraces new technology, but respects its past - and doesn't try to evolve the series into something it was never meant to be. There are all-new visuals, missions and game modes, but its connection to the past remains fundamental to its success. It's a proper sequel to the brilliant Ace Combat 5 (a decent port of which is bundled with PS4 pre-orders - and it runs at 4K60 on Pro), with gameplay evolved from AC4 and AC5. However, the fundamental technology has changed: similar to the Tekken and Soulcalibur titles, a proprietary game engine has been ditched for Unreal Engine 4, but thankfully the move pays off handsomely for the most part, with larger environments, lots of destruction and more on-screen entities.

For this new game, the developers have built everything from scratch. All new plane models, new scenery and a lot of new visual features are on display while the move to current-gen hardware enables a wide range of new visual effects, some of which have a direct impact on gameplay. Perhaps the most impressive addition is the introduction of volumetric cloud cover. Such systems have become increasingly common this generation but most games with this feature tend to be ground-based. Ace Combat 7, however, has players diving in an out of cloud cover. These clouds appear as thick volumes which you can fly through. They are impacted by light, such as that from the sun, and ice and rain are taken into consideration.

Fly through a dark cloud and your visibility is reduced significantly, which is key as this feature is also used for gameplay purposes - it's more difficult to lock-on to or see the enemy through clouds, somewhat implausibly you can cloud-cover to hide from radar detection. This is the first time in series history that cloud cover plays a significant role in mission design and the twist it adds to gameplay is sensational. Along those same lines, Ace Combat 7 introduces weather which can impact your flight performance. In one mission, while flying through tight spaces, strong bursts of wind can throw your plane off course while, later, blasts of lightning can temporarily interrupt your instruments forcing you to fly blind.

FIFA 19's new and super powerful FUT Future Stars cards spark realism debate

EA has added a unique FIFA Ultimate Team promotion that's certainly got a lot of players buying card packs - but it's also sparked a debate about realism.

The new promotion is called FUT Future Stars, and it revolves around a new set of cards of young players with the stats they'd get if they realised their potential.

The promo includes "FFS" Vinicius Junior, whose potential gives him an incredible 92 overall rating at left wing, FFS Jadon Sancho, who has a 90 overall rating at right wing, and FFS Kai Havertz, who is a 90-rated central attacking midfielder. These players are already in the game in standard form, but with much lower statistics.

Impressive Skyrim multiplayer mod nears release

An impressive Skyrim multiplayer mod enters closed beta soon, with an open beta to follow.

The eye-catching Skyrim Together mod is more than someone's pipedream - it's a functional mod that currently lets up to eight players play together in Bethesda's hugely popular fantasy game.

The mod is the work of a group of talented software engineers who have spent some time tinkering with Skyrim in order to get multiplayer working. The closed beta is for those who back the project on Patreon. The open beta launches immediately after the closed beta, which the modders said wouldn't last long in an announcement post on the Skyrim Together subreddit.

Mortal Kombat 11's most interesting new character can add or remove time from the round clock

This week, developer NetherRealm revealed Mortal Kombat 11 with a decent chunk of gameplay and a raft of new details.

A bunch of characters were revealed (Scorpion, Raiden, Sub-Zero, Skarlet and Sonya Blade etc), but for me the most interesting new character in the game is Geras.

Geras, who's a servant of new evil boss Kronika, has the power to manipulate time. Part Sandman, part Prince of Persia, Geras creates devastating objects out of sand and uses them to smash up his opponents. His gameplay reveal, below, reminds me of Tremor from previous Mortal Kombat games.
