Chris Avellone has been working on Respawn's Star Wars game

There's a lot resting on Respawn's upcoming Star Wars title. In the context of EA binning practically all other games planned for the franchise, many Star Wars fans are feeling pretty anxious about how the third-person action/adventure will pan out.

Thankfully, there's finally some promising news here, as veteran game writer Chris Avellone has confirmed his own involvement in the project.

Although the tweet itself is fairly bare-bones, Avellone's LinkedIn profile reveals he worked on Jedi: Fallen Order for 11 months, in which time he did story work, story and character reviews, and cinematic scripts for the game. Sounds like a fairly weighty contribution.

Stein's;Gate Elite review - a must-have for fans, a maybe for everyone else

When is a video game not a video game?

It's not that I'm just feeling a little existential today. Honest. It's a question that popped up in my head just a few hours into my inaugural journey with Stein's;Gate Elite and it's refused to dissipate since.

If we were curled up on a pub's squishy sofa cushions right now and I asked you that question over a pint and some beef and onion crisps, how would you reply? What fundamental thing does a game need to have to be classed as such? Is it the ability to gather skill points to bolster your abilities? Is it the knowledge that you can affect the in-game world around you? Or is it just the fact you boot it up on a console, a phone, or your PC sufficient for you? What does a game have to have that makes it stand apart from a movie or even an interactive novel?

Bethesda details the new boozy crafting system coming soon to Fallout 76

Further to its 2019 roadmap, Bethesda has outlined what's next for Fallout 76, including details of its new Brewing and Distilling crafting system.

"As we start moving down the road toward our next patch, we're ready to share more details on what's coming in Wild Appalachia this March - starting with a crash course on the all-new Brewing and Distilling crafting system!" said Bethesda in a new blog post.

"Your path to becoming the Wasteland's premiere bartender will begin near Vault-Tec University. There you will relive the glory days of VTU's finest and discover the mischief they got up to outside of the classroom. Your continued studies will lead you to a notorious speakeasy, introduce you to Biv-Appalachia's tipsiest robot, and teach you to craft the illicit Nukashine using the all-new Brewing Station."

This mod turns Resident Evil 2's Mr. X into Thomas the Tank Engine

A PC mod has replaced Resident Evil 2's terrifying Mr. X with an even scarier sight: Thomas the Tank Engine.

The mod - which is available now on Nexus Mods - replaces just the visuals, so for the complete and thoroughly terrifying experience, you might want to take the author's suggestion and switch the sound files, too.

In the description, the author just says: "Honestly, I dont know why i made this."

Square Enix has confirmed that a free-to-play version of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is coming to PC and PlayStation 4 next month.

The 3v3 brawler - developed in partnership with Team Ninja at Koei Tecmo Games - will be called, unsurprisingly, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT Free Edition. It'll offer "the opportunity to try out a limited roster of characters on a weekly basis" and permits players of the free version to mix freely with those who've stumped up for the paid version.

"A variety of characters and weapons are also available for individual purchase," Square says, (thanks, Gematsu) so your favourite characters "can be a permanent member" of your go-to team.

Honor And Duty: D-Day brings old-school FPS action to PSVR

14 years ago I was mad into Call of Duty 2 multiplayer. It was back during the heyday of Xbox Live on the Xbox 360, when online multiplayer for home consoles felt like a relatively new thing. The amount of hours I sank into COD 2 multiplayer back then was probably bordering on the unhealthy, but time sure does fly when you're having fun and all that.

Playing it nowadays, Call of Duty 2 multiplayer seems so basic and quaint, comprising of simple kill or be killed game modes with none of this modern jet-packing, reviving and loot crating malarky. Even with today's advances in online multiplayer (I'm looking at you, lovely, lovely battle royale games) I often feel a twang of nostalgia for some old-school, WW2-based first person shooter action. That's why Honor and Duty: D-Day caught my eye when it released on the Playstation Store earlier in the week.

The VR multiplayer matches in Honor and Duty: D-Day feel like they come straight out of the COD 2 playbook and you can watch me try it out in this week's episode of Ian's VR Corner, which you can find just below these very words.

Activision-Blizzard tells investors recent redundancies "could negatively impact [its] business"

Following rumours, then confirmation, that Activision-Blizzard had cut 8 per cent of its global workforce in spite of record revenue, the company's annual Form 10-K report - published on 28th February - acknowledges to its investors that the consequences of these layoffs "could negatively impact [its] business".

The statement also says that the "actual savings" from the layoffs "may vary materially based on factors such as local labour regulations, negotiations with third parties, and operational requirements", admitting "estimates and assumptions are also subject to significant economic, competitive and other uncertainties, some of which are beyond our control" and that making 800 people redundant offers "no assurance that our business will be more efficient or effective than prior to implementation of the plan, or that additional restructuring plans will not be required or implemented in the future".

"In February 2019, we announced a restructuring plan under which we plan to refocus our resources on our largest opportunities and to remove unnecessary levels of complexity and duplication from certain parts of our business," Activision-Blizzard said via the 306-page statement (thanks, PC Games Insider).

Some of World of Warcraft Classic's demo bugs were not bugs at all

Blizzard has confirmed that some of the issues reported by players during the World of Warcraft Classic demo were not, in fact, bugs, but are instead intentional mechanics that faithfully mimic how the game used to be fifteen years ago.

"Thank you to everyone who gave us so much feedback to work with, especially the community members who compiled lists of issues that people found with the demo," wrote community manager "Kaivax" in an update on the official forums (thanks, PC Gamer). "We've looked at everything that was reported, and want to share a few anecdotes with you so you can see how we're tackling these issues.

"Players reported that [the] Warlock demon summoning was broken - lots of players said that you shouldn't lose your current demon until the new one appears," Kaivax said. "We double-checked and in the original 1.12 WoW, and there, as soon as you started summoning a new demon, your existing demon disappeared. So the demo actually matched how the game played originally. There were a few other reports - such as "rare mobs do way less damage" and "Kobolds at Jangolode Mine run faster than walking speed when running away" - where we were able to confirm that the gameplay was the same in the demo as in the original 1.12 WoW."

Someone leaked Apex Legends a year ago but no-one believed them

While Electronic Arts' surprise announcement of Apex Legends may have been a shock to most of us, it turns out a Reddit user leaked the game 11 months ago... and no-one believed them.

In a thread called "Alleged Minimap for Rumored Titanfall Battle Royal game" (thanks, Polygon), Redditor hiticonic was unceremoniously downvoted when they speculated that a Titanfall battle royale game was in the works, complete with map, last April. The fact they didn't add any further context might not have helped the case - posting a map, a headline and nothing more was unlikely to convince many.

"I really hope this doesn't happen," one commenter said (they later apologised and added: "I have put too much time into this game so far, my prejudice was very wrong"), whilst another insisted: "IT'S NOT REAL".

The devil within: Hideaki Itsuno on 25 years at Capcom

Capcom, you might have noticed, is on a bit of a roll. Monster Hunter finally met with the global success it's always deserved, its survival horror series won back its fans with the pure horror of Resident Evil 7 and the superlative reimagining of Resident Evil 2, and even the humble Mega Man series is on surer footing than it's been for a while. Really, though, it's what's coming next that really excites me: Devil May Cry 5 isn't just the return of Capcom's most stylish series. It's the return of Capcom's most accomplished director.

Hideaki Itsuno last sat in the director's chair for 2012's Dragon's Dogma - a standout title in a sometimes troubled era for Capcom's last generation - but you can trace his history with the company much further back than that. "After I got out of college, I thought to myself, well, I could be a teacher, that might be okay," he tells us on the London leg of Devil May Cry 5's final press tour, the interview taking place at the top of a mist-shrouded Shard. "But then I thought, you know, I'm going to have to spend 35 years working before I retire, so I should probably go and do something I'm going to enjoy."

And Itsuno enjoys video games. Actually, that's not quite right - he loves them. On his desk at Capcom headquarters in Osaka is a CRT TV he uses to indulge his passion for older games - late last year it was Famicom baseball game Famista, though right it's SNK's 1990 action RPG God Slayer that's keeping him occupied.

Hello! Welcome to the second installment of our new semi-regular series in which we'll be looking at world-building, the art of creating interesting settings, and, where possible, talking to the people who do this stuff for a living.

Games have a rare power to take us to new places, but they share world-building with many other art forms and disciplines. Alongside video games, we're also going to be investigating books and films and architecture and anything else that seems worth exploring.

Today, we're looking at one of Ellen Raskin's brilliant puzzle-mystery books, a classical tale of deception and intrigue with an evocative Greenwich Village setting.

Fairtrade Fortnight aims for living wage for Ivory Coast farmers

Fairtrade Fortnight began in the UK this week, and its commendable work has an especially potent message this year.

Its core aim for 2019 centres on calling on assistance for women cocoa farmers in West Africa, specifically Ivory Coast, the vast majority of whom are working in below poverty line conditions.

Though this may not be a new revelation in itself, the fact that it’s still a major problem is deeply concerning – along with the fact that over two million children are still being employed as labourers in the cocoa sector in Africa.

While the major corporations including Mondelez International, Mars, Barry Callebaut and Olam have all instituted their own sustainability schemes to address these key topics of our times, there’s still a considerable way to go in bringing about long-term change for those at the sharp end of the sector.

According to the Fairtrade Foundation’s latest research, women in Ivory Coast earn just 74p a day, well short of the £1.86 mark that is considered enough for a living wage.

It’s a subject that we have covered on a number of occasions within the pages of Confectionery Production after, including covering the World Cocoa Conference and Chocoa over the past couple of years, which have had farmer welfare as key elements of the events.

As we have previously reported, Ivory Coast in particular is facing challenging conditions, with the government halting introduction of hybrid crops, which some industry observers have claimed, holds the key to improving crop yields and productivity.

But beyond any such measures, perhaps the most obvious move to help improve the lives of those working in the sector has been highlighted by founder of Hotel Chocolat, Angus Thirlwell, speaking at the Academy of Chocolate’s annual conference.

He asserted that the best way to help farming communities was simply to significantly raise the cost of chocolate products as a whole, which would lead to a direct increase in farmer wages. Whether the market, and indeed consumers are quite ready for that, is hard to say, but it if a trend for more premium confectionery is anything to go by, perhaps the timing is right to re-appraise what we’re all paying for our chocolate.

The star-shaped Madeleine cakes come in a range of flavours, fillings, and toppings. A firm favourite in France, the sweet cakes are a convenient, easy snack, perfect for hotel, coffee shop and café customers. Operators simply thaw and serve, for a soft, generously filled, pure butter cake, made with premium ingredients.

Lovecraft-inspired detective horror The Sinking City showcases its investigative tools

It's been a while since we last got a look at Frogwares' promising Lovecraft-inspired detective adventure, The Sinking City, but here we are now, with a brand-new developer video, offering an overview of the game's sleuthing mechanics as well as new in-game footage.

In The Sinking City, players are cast as private investigator Charles Reed, who finds himself in Oakmont, Massachusetts - a corner of 1920s America, plagued by a supernatural flood and other, more troubling, cosmic horrors - in search of a means to cure his hellish visions.

As Frogwares has explained before, The Sinking City is very much focussed on challenging players' investigative impulses and deductive powers, meaning no handholding and no objectives littering the map."We will never tell you how to approach a quest, where to go, what to look for, who you should accuse", says the developer in its latest trailer.

Dirt Rally 2.0 on Xbox One X races ahead of the pack

Codemasters' Dirt Rally 2.0 sees the developer return to the height of its powers, delivering one of the best driving simulations of the current generation and earning a prestigious Eurogamer Essential award. The quality of the racing experience is superb but Codemasters delivers on the visual side too with a beautiful presentation powered by its proprietary Ego engine - but how do the various console versions compare? The answers are surprising.

Perhaps the most important takeaway, however, is that Dirt Rally 2.0 looks and plays well on all consoles, with surprisingly little variance in the graphical feature set across all four versions. There are some rendering differences between the base and enhanced consoles, but the only real disappointment here concerns the PlayStation 4 Pro version of the game - limited to the same 1080p resolution as the base console, with only a smattering of visual upgrades. Meanwhile, Xbox One X offers a revelatory improvement in image quality, using dynamic resolution to move seamlessly between 1800p and full, native 2160p, depending on GPU load.

The standard consoles, meanwhile, both target 1080p, but again, dynamic resolution is in play. Curiously, the vanilla PlayStation 4 delivers full HD (dynamic resolution is a possibility, but all of our measurements resolve at 1080p), giving an overall experience that's perhaps too similar to its Pro equivalent. Only Xbox One S tends to struggle here, with a pixel-count that varies between 1440x810 (but could potentially go lower) all the way up to native 1080p - and even with this more apparent variation in resolution, performance there isn't quite where it needs to be, though still fine overall. All console versions use TAA anti-aliasing - also an option on PC, where MSAA is also available.

Insurgency: Sandstorm gets its first free major content update

Developer New World Interactive's team-based tactical shooter Insurgency: Sandstorm has just received its first major content update since launch, adding a new Arcade playlist mode, new weapons, and more.

The biggie here is the Arcade playlist, which, says the developer,"lays the foundation for adding fresh, new, non-traditional game modes". The idea is that the playlist will be expanded over time, with new modes and rulesets steadily being added into rotation.

To start things off, Sandstorm now has a 24-player Team Deathmatch mode, which removes faction restrictions on weapons and upgrades, and adds a greater number of supply points from which weapons, upgrades, and attachments can be purchased.

It looks like a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign remaster is coming to PS4

Eagle-eyed internet observers have spotted a new PEGI rating for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered on PS4 - and it's probably not unreasonable to infer this means a remastered version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's campaign is coming relatively soon.

This wouldn't be the first time Activision has wielded its big remaster stick for the Call of Duty franchise, of course. In 2016, the publisher unleashed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered upon the world (which is part of PS Plus this month, by the way) - delivering an extensive remake of the original's solo campaign and multiplayer component.

It sounds like this new remaster (whose PEGI listing, reported by Gematsu, vanished mid-way through writing this story) will be the solo campaign only, infamous No Russian level and all.

Red Dead Online update falls short of fixing griefing and economy woes

The Red Dead Online beta is still trundling on, and with it the continued complaints about griefing, the in-game economy, microtransactions and lack of content. This week the game received a major update - and despite specifically seeking to address "destructive player behaviour", the update has received criticism for failing to fully address griefing problems, and for actually encouraging aggressive play.

Oh, and all those other issues are still lingering too.

On the griefing front, Rockstar has managed to make some positive changes, including tweaks to the parley system. Previously you had to be killed several times before being given the option to parley or feud: now players have the option to parley after one death, meaning you can instantly opt not to be damaged by the posse (or damage them) for 10 minutes.

Ape Out review - a meditation on jazz, violence and escapee monkeys

From the moment you first smash your way out of your cell, pulping a guard against the opposite wall, it's clear Ape Out is going to be a lot of fun. The next thing you realise is that you're actually playing a kind of rhythm game. One where all you know is murder.

Ape Out has a very simple conceit and is very easy to pick up. You, that is to say a honking great gorilla, want to escape. Lots of armed guards stand in your way, so it's probably best to brutally murder them on your way out the door. You have only two buttons to contend with - one to grab and one to smash. Hurling your enemies into the nearest wall or grabbing them for use as a meat shield makes you feel tremendously powerful, and the weird shuffling movements of the gorilla have been so well realised that movement is a delight - as long as you're playing with a controller, that is. Playing Ape Out with a keyboard and mouse is perfectly doable, it just lacks the same flow afforded by twin analogue sticks.

Really though, as captivating as its murderous gorilla is, the true star of Ape Out is the music. Each level pulses or ticks or rattles or quakes along with its jazz soundtrack - the music ebbing and flowing depending on how well your rampage is going - and each enemy kill is punctuated by a noise, whether that be a cymbal hit or the shriek of a trumpet. At first, these noises feel like a punchline - a bit of slapstick to round off the vibrant, bloody visuals. The more you play, however, the more you open yourself up to the music and realise just how integral that soundtrack is. Suddenly those cymbal crashes and bits of brass don't seem like throwaway jokes any more - killing enemies almost feels like improvising. I really didn't expect a game about an ape dashing people's skulls against the wall to turn out to be a meditation on jazz as a medium yet here we are, and the effect is quite brilliant.

Tired of real pets chewing your favourite thong and pooping on your carpet? Bereft at Nintendo's ongoing failure to bring its beloved Nintendogs + Cats to Switch? Well then, you just might be interested in developer Imagineer's spiritual successor, Little Friends: Dogs & Cats.

Little Friends: Dogs & Cats, as its name very heavily implies, grants players access to a variety of furry critters, both of the canine and feline persuasion. And once you've picked your preferred cutie, you can pet it, play with it, and dress it in absurd outfits to your heart's content.

Dogs & Cats, which launched in Japan at the tail-end of last year (no pun intended), features six breeds of puppy - including Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, and French Bulldog - and three types of kitten. You can have any combination of three pets out in your stylishly minimalist (but customisable) virtual apartment at one time, and can keep up to 12 in the hotel.

Diablo 3: Eternal Collection drops to £31 on Nintendo Switch

If you're eager to take your hunt for orange sparkly loot on the move then the Nintendo Switch version of Diablo 3: Eternal Collection is available for £30.99 at Amazon UK.

It's rare to find this port of the Blizzard action-RPG on sale, so worth snapping up while you can if you've been looking out for a discount - however small.

It's not quite as legendary as the price drop to £30 we saw at Very over Black Friday that went out of stock in a matter of seconds. They seem to have stumbled across some new stock now, though, and price-matched Amazon at £30.99 as well.

Dead or Alive 6 review: naff and likely to embarrass

Ah, Dead or Alive. The boob game. The kawaii cash grab. The Japanese fighter more famous for its bouncing breasts than its juggle combos. How has a new mainline Dead or Alive game come out in 2019? Did Team Ninja, a developer that I'd thought had reinvented itself with the superb Nioh, lose a bet with Koei Tecmo or something? However it happened, the result is a game that's at best naff, at worst grim.

Dead or Alive 6 has endured a tiresome, weird bait and switch from the developers at Team Ninja. At reveal we were told the heavily sexualised female characters of old had been ditched in favour of a more realistic look in-line with heavy-hitting fighting. Series star Kasumi was shown wearing an outfit that covered her up and looked a bit like something a modern day ninja would wear to battle. You know, it was an outfit that made sense.

The game itself, though, betrays this marketing spiel, exposing it for the lip service it always was. By default, the female characters' breasts bounce around like balloons tied to string (you can turn this off in the settings). The skimpiest outfits - some of which are nothing more than a pair of knickers and a bra - must be unlocked via playing the game. And Team Ninja has stuck with the icky camera free roam for victory poses. Make no mistake, Dead or Alive 6 is Dead or Alive, warts and all.
