The British Army needs "binge gamers", "snow flakes" and "me me me millennials"

How do you do, fellow kids? The British Army is on the hunt for fresh meat for the grinder, and "binge gamers" are in the firing line.

Not only that, our Army's after "snow flakes", "me me me millennials" and "phone zombies".

"Are you a binge gamer?" the British Army's new poster asks. "The Army needs you and your drive."

Lego Lord of the Rings games removed from Steam, Xbox and PS4 stores

Lego Lord of the Rings and Lego The Hobbit have left the Grey Havens and are no longer available to download from PC and console marketplaces.

The games disappeared from Steam, PlayStation and Xbox stores on or around 1st January - suggesting some kind of licensing restriction ran out at the ent of last year.

It's a shame, because Lego Lord of the Rings in particular is brilliant - a love letter to Middle-earth and Peter Jackson's original movie trilogy. It remains one of Lego's best open worlds.

The video games that tried (and failed) to predict 2019

Ever since their inception, video games have been offering us visions of what the future of the human race may hold. But now we've made it to the real life future (aka 2019) it's time to look back at how accurate those predictions actually were.

In the video below, I take a look at 9 games from the past that attempted to imagine what our present day life would be like and, if you hadn't already guessed, some of those predictions have proven to be a little wide of the mark.

Oh, and this is nothing to do with the video but if you want to feel really old, I recently found out that in August it'll be 20 years since Tony Hawk's Pro Skater came out. Sorry.

Oreo welcomes dark chocolate variety

A new Oreo flavour is due to hit shelves in the US today – dark chocolate.

A dark chocolate flavoured cream is sandwiched between two classic Oreo chocolate biscuits. The new variant will be a permanent addition to the Oreo range.

According to a company statement, the new variant will “help fans embrace these colder, darker days.”

I think I like Below the most when I'm not actually playing it

Before I went home for Christmas last year, I had two firm ideas about Below based on, admittedly, only about ten hours of playing it. The first idea was that the game was a bit of a well-intentioned botch. The second was that, combat and exploration aside, what Below was really concerned with was fostering the slow realisation in its players that game design itself is probably one big roguelike.

My argument for this second point went something like this. Roguelikes - and roguelites, if you're willing to allow the term - are so good at creating stories because you have to commit. To play is to make decisions in a roguelike, and in a roguelike you have to live by those decisions to the very end. Below is definitely a roguelike (or maybe a roguelite, if you're willing to allow the term). Anyway, it's a dungeon-crawler: you wash up on an island, you mooch about in the beautiful pixel drizzle for a bit and then you discover a mountain with a very tall slot in it. It's a negative-space Monolith, beckoning to you from some kind of elongated version of 2001 (a negative-space odyssey).

In you go, and sure enough there are themed levels of dungeon to explore as you go down, down, down, navigating procedural rooms and their increasingly tricksy beasties as you grapple with shield-heavy combat and typical survival stuff that sees you expiring, over time, through hunger, thirst and the cold unless you salvage the things you need to see this triple-threat off for the time being.

Nearly every current and future episode of Life is Strange will be available as part of Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft has announced.

Last week, eagle-eyed Game Pass subscribers spotted prequel series Before the Storm joining the original Life is Strange season on Xbox Game Pass.

Today, Microsoft confirmed Life is Strange 2 will also come to the £8 per month pass, starting tomorrow with the sequel's already-launched first episode. Future LIS2 episodes will launch on Game Pass "soon" - which suggests but does not confirm they'll arrive as and when they release.

Looks like the very first Pokémon movie is getting a CGI remake

Pokémon fans are poring over the teaser trailer for this year's Pokémon film: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution, set to open in Japan this July.

(This is, by the way, completely separate to 2019's other Pokémon film, the Deadpool-starring Detective Pikachu.)

We've known this movie's title for a while - and it has long sounded like a remake or reimagining of the franchise's very first film Pokémon The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back, released in Japan back in 1998.

Greggs launches vegan sausage roll

High street bakery chain Greggs is launching a vegan version of it’s popular sausage roll this week.

The company, which sells 1.5m of its traditional pork sausage rolls a week, says the new version mirrors the original classic with flaky pastry – made with vegetable oil – and a ‘bespoke’ Quorn filling.

Last year, animal welfare organisation Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) launched a petition calling on Greggs to produce a vegan version of its sausage roll. The petition gathered over 20,000 signatures.

Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: “Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products. We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now.

“It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.”

Veganuary is a growing trend where thousands of people pledge to avoid consuming animal products for the month of January.

The new menu item will be be released in 950 Greggs stores on 3 January.

PlayStation Plus January 2019 games include Steep, Portal Knights

It may not have been a white Christmas this year, but you can slide into the seasonally snowy Steep right now as a PlayStation Plus subscriber.

The PS3 edition of Amplitude, from rhythm game gurus Harmonix, is also part of the mix.

HMV will accept your gift cards despite administration

Beleaguered bricks and mortar chain HMV will continue to accept gift vouchers despite its latest fall into administration - something which, last time around, it initially refused to do.

The UK high street stalwart was forced to call in administrators last week after talks with suppliers failed. It's worrying - this should be HMV's busiest time of year and 2200 jobs are at risk.

Back in January 2013, when HMV fell into administration last time, the retailer had 4350 staff. It was saved after better deals with the movie and music industries were reached by new owner Hilco, and after a round of shop closures by administrators Deloitte.

Fallout 76 to get player vending

Fallout 76 will get player vending, Bethesda has confirmed.

The much-requested feature is coming to the multiplayer game as part of a future update, Bethesda said in an update blog post.

Player vending is something Fallout 76 players have called for since the game's launch last year. We don't have any information on how it works, but players are already excitedly speculating at the prospect of setting up shop in post-apocalyptic West Virginia. And there are many questions: will you be able to set the price of items, or will there be a global price list? Will you sell from your camp, or will you sell from a vending machine? If you sell from your camp, will you be able to mark yourself as a vendor on the map?

Eurogamer readers' top 50 games of 2018

Well hi, hello and how do you do? There's just one last festive tradition to tick off the list before we resume work for the new year, and it's the finest tradition of them all - the Eurogamer reader's top 50 games of the year! 2018 was a fascinating, diverse year for new games, and your list beautifully reflects that - as do your comments. Thank you so much for taking part, and see you all again soon!

What we said: "Mania takes everything that was memorable about Sega's pioneering 2D platformers - that joy in momentum always teetering on the brink of disaster, the deranged magnificence of those levels, the mournful bassnote as poor, faithful Tails stampedes into all the traps you've just triggered in passing - and rejuvenates it, to the point where you can only put down the pad in astonishment. Sonic the Hedgehog happened, everybody.

"He's supposed to be all washed up - gaming's Birdman, a balding, leather-jacketed C-lister they wheel on whenever some Mario crossover finds itself short on backing characters. How the hell is this possible? It's possible because for a small group of dedicated aficionados, the blue blur's halcyon period never ended. What's old has become new, and Sonic is once again the star he was supposed to be."
