Songbird Symphony gets a catchy new gameplay trailer; release date set for July

Songbird Symphony stars an adorably musical bird and features platforming, puzzle, and rhythm elements. It will be out on PC, PS4, and Switch.

You’ll never convince me that “I Love to Singa” isn’t the best cartoon ever made. An adorable round bird singing away to his heart’s content? Yes, absolutely, sign me up. Songbird Symphony borrows a page of the music notes with its premise, which also has an adorable round bird singing away to his heart’s content. Yes, absolutely, sign me up.

Songbird Symphony is a rhythm-based puzzle platformer that puts you in the shoes of… well, there’s no shoes, but you’ll be playing as an orphaned chick named “Birb” as he seeks his true origins. It features delightfully bouncy animations rendered through a pixel art lens, and even boss battles to test your rhythmic mettle.

The soundtrack has an interesting twist to it as well, if this description is anything to go by:

Come to the aid of the creatures of the forest to find hidden musical notes scattered across the levels. Your good deeds will release extra layers of beats that will blend harmoniously with the soundtrack, bringing further the atmosphere of the world to life.

The game is scheduled to release on 25th July across PC, PS4, and Switch.

Have a look at its gameplay trailer below:

Songbird Symphony is being developed by Singaporean outfit Joysteak Studios, which was founded in 2017 and consists of three brothers. British indie publisher PQube Limited is handling publishing duties for the game. We know them as the publishers of Cat Quest, which released in 2017.

For more information on Songbird Symphony, have a look at the developer’s official website here.

For more irrepressible cuteness, have a look at our review of She and the Light Bearer. For some good ol’ fashioned platforming action, check out JackQuest: The Tale of the Sword.

Destiny 2's latest lore provides a mend-bending nod back to Destiny 1

Destiny's ever-labyrinthine lore has just been expanded with a fan-pleasing throwback to the original Destiny - and in true Bungie style, it's opened up another set of questions in the process.

(Naturally, spoilers follow if you're not keeping up with Destiny 2: Forsaken's endgame.)

Destiny 2's latest weekly reset results in a new meeting with is-she-or-isn't-she-good Queen Mara Sov, who once again dwells upon what's next for the Destiny universe. Did she see the Activision breakup coming? Probably.

PC and Xbox One Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 players call League Play "first on PS4" timed exclusivity a "slap in the face"

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 finally gets League Play four months after the game came out - and it's "first on PlayStation 4".

The World League Hub, which includes League Play, was initially planned to release in December. Now the hub is due out mid-February. Developer Treyarch said it's "investing additional time and development into making Black Ops 4 competitive play as robust as possible".

League Play is a competitive feature that was popular with Black Ops 2 players. It includes a focused ranked mode fuelled by skill-based matchmaking, and a playlist that features the same rules the pros adhere to in the Call of Duty World League.

Little Moons Mochi go vegan

Little Moons are launching a new Great Taste Award winning vegan Belgian Chocolate mochi to Ocado and Selfridges as well as to distributors and delis nationwide.

Handmade in London, the treats are bite-sized balls of vegan Belgian chocolate ice cream wrapped in a layer of soft mochi and dusted in rich cocoa powder – reminiscent of a chilled Belgian truffle.

There are six other non-vegan flavours to choose from including Alphonso Mango, Uji Matcha, Sumatran Coconut and Madagascan Vanilla.

For the uninitiated, mochi is Japan’s most beloved dessert and has been enjoyed for thousands of years. It is traditionally eaten over New Year, where it is made in a ceremony called mochitsuki. Mochi is made from a naturally gluten-free rice flour dough, which is pounded and beaten until it reaches a distinctive soft and chewy texture. Little Moons have made the concept their own by creating bite-sized balls of gelato ice cream, chocolate ganache or cheesecake wrapped in a layer of soft and chewy mochi.

From 64 calories per ball, Little Moons mochi are gluten free, free from artificial flavourings, colours and preservatives and they are suitable for vegetarians, and now vegans, with the launch of Belgian Chocolate mochi.

Little Moons was set up in 2010 by siblings Vivien and Howard Wong, whose family has been making traditional mochi for the past 30 years for the Asian grocery market in the UK, and they made it their mission to bring Japan’s best-kept secret to the rest of the world with both familiar flavours and novel ones.

Little Moons now supply over 6 million mochi a year to restaurants across Europe and the Middle East. The small team launched their grocery range in August 2015 at Whole Foods Market and has since become their best-selling ice cream brand with special flavours (including Slow Roasted Hazelnut, Espresso and Salted Caramel) available from pick and mix freezers in each venue.

Changes of perspective are vital to representation in games

Games, role-playing games in particular, have created this interesting conundrum in which most of the things you do will turn out to your advantage somehow. I advance through the world. I give people reason to like me or to fear me, whatever I enjoy best, and both options work out for my character equally well.

These games want to make you their hero. You're supposed to have an empowering experience, punishing you for any action seems counterproductive. Having diverse heroes in such games is often especially great because people of certain backgrounds rarely see themselves depicted as heroes. It's one of the reasons playing Kassandra from Assassin's Creed Odyssey can feel so liberating - if you decide to play her as a lesbian, you don't only get to control a powerful female warrior, you also get to act as someone who is unapologetic about her preferences and gets to have the odd fun romp instead of having to fear public opinion.

So being a hero is fun and games, literally, because even as the challenge increases, so does your power. I absolutely want more people to experience being powerful through representation, as there are many races, identities and body types entirely unrepresented in games as of yet. I want to believe we're steadily getting there.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate 2.0 is live, introduces first DLC character and a bit more besides

Super Smash Bros Ultimate has just got its most significant update to date, with version 2.0 landing and introducing an all-new character.

The identity of the character isn't exactly a surprise - it's the Piranha Plant! - but there are a couple of small changes and fixes that have come as part of the patch. If you press both jump buttons you'll now be able to perform a short hop, while the Spirit Board is now playable offline with up to four other players.

There are also a generous suite of balance updates for the existing roster (you can see the full rundown here) with Jigglypuff and Rosalina seeming to emerge with the most improvements.

Shadow of the Colossus-inspired Praey for the Gods enters Steam Early Access this week

No Matter Studios has announced that its atmospheric, boss-focussed action-adventure, Praey for the Gods, will launch on Steam Early Access on January 31st.

Praey for the Gods (which, once upon a time, didn't have the conspicuous 'a' in its name - until Bethesda's lawyers got on the case) was first unveiled back in 2016. Not long after, it successfully managed to crowdfund $501,252 USD through Kickstarter, easily smashing its original $300,000 USD goal.

And really, it's not hard to see the appeal. Praey for the Gods' beautiful, snow-blanketed landscape looks wonderfully melancholy, and provide a striking backdrop to the adventures of a young hero tasked with finding a way to end the perpetual winter. And that, it transpires, involves slaying the gargantuan creatures (or gods, if you will) that inhabit the mysterious world.

Delightful piano-themed rhythm game Deemo gets even more free new songs on Switch

Developer Rayark's wonderful ivory tinkling rhythm game Deemo has just received a brand-new update on Switch, adding yet more free songs, plus extended Labo Piano support, to the already absurdly generous base game.

Deemo's 1.5 update is available to download now and consists of two parts. The first, known as the Team Grimoire Collection, adds five new songs to the game's piano-themed line-up: Chaos Magnvm, Dyslexia, Grimoire of Blue, Alexitheymia, and Librum clausi.

The second half, meanwhile, expands Deemo's Toy-Con Collection, which was introduced in the game's 1.4 update and features reworked versions of existing songs for exclusive use with Nintendo's Labo Piano. If you've got the cardboard kit lying around, you can combine it with Deemo and convincingly hammer along to the likes of Angelic Sphere, Entrance, Infinite Puzzle, Invite, Legacy, Light Pollution, Magnolia, Platinum, Pulses, and Suspenseful Third Day.

PUBG app lets you discover if you killed a streamer

Something I've always wondered when playing PUBG is whether the person I'm killing (or more likely, is killing me) happens to be a famous streamer. What was their reaction? What did Twitch chat say? Did I publicly embarrass myself in front of thousands of viewers?

For better or worse, it seems you can now find out, as one PUBG community developer has made an app which displays kills caught on camera by streamers.

The app, called PUBG Report, uses in-game data to link kills to Twitch streams. It's made possible by PUBG API, an official (and free service) where developers can use post-match game data to build tools and websites.

EA buckles in Belgium, stops selling FIFA Points following loot box gambling pressure

EA has announced plans to stop selling FIFA Points in Belgium following government pressure over loot boxes.

In FIFA Ultimate Team, you can spend real world money on FIFA Points, which can then be used to buy card packs.

In September 2018, the Belgian government, which had declared loot boxes to be a form of gambling because players don't know exactly which items a box may contain when buying one, launched a criminal investigation into EA after the publisher refused to modify FIFA's randomised card pack loot boxes in order to comply with the country's gambling laws.

Lithuanian magic appears in Tesco with Magija

Magija is the latest offering from Lithuanian dairy giant, Zemaitijos Pienas, and is now available in Tesco stores.

This dessert bar combines a quality chocolate glaze over fresh, chocolate infused curd with chocolate chips. The curd has been aerated giving a fluffier end product. In addition to chocolate, Magija is available in vanilla, toffee, coconut and caramelised hazelnut.

Magija has long been a favourite with families across Eastern Europe, where it is used as a snack or sweet pudding.

Magija contains no artificial additives or flavouring and contributes towards the recommended daily intake of calcium and protein. The product is also lower in fats and sugar compared to other chocolate snacks and puddings.

Kingdom Hearts 3 review - a grand finale that's both torturous and sublime

By my reckoning, there are 238 cutscenes in Kingdom Hearts 3. If that sounds like a lot for a game of around 30-40 hours, that's because it is. But then Kingdom Hearts 3 is, in the modern vernacular, a lot: from the dazzling pyrotechnics that accompany many of its special moves to its extravagant, indulgent final act, restraint is not in its vocabulary. To a point, its aggressive investment in its story is understandable. After all, it has two mainline entries and roughly half a dozen spin-offs' worth of narrative threads to pull together and tie up. But heavens, it shows. This is a game that should really have a spring in its step - this is Disney, for goodness' sake - but it's constantly burdened by its own knotty history.

For all its intricacies, the underlying story is a fairly simple one. Our big-shoed hero, Sora, needs "the power of waking" to sort out regular villains Organization 13 - who with their ostentatious zips and hooded black leather trenchcoats look ever more like Dementors in a fetish club. The tone is set in the very first scene, which adopts the time-honoured tradition of representing the battle between good and evil as a game of chess between a man dressed in black and another in white. As one takes his turn, he asks the other the immortal question, "Have you heard of the ancient Keyblade War?"

It's an opening line that will cause as many to roll their eyes as to rub their hands. It soon becomes apparent that this is a game for anyone who's embedded themselves in Kingdom Hearts' tangled lore for the better part of two decades, or else those who've been playing catch-up in the long lead-up to the launch of this chapter-closer. That several specialist sites and YouTubers have felt the need to produce their own 'story so far' says a lot. That a five-chapter recap - briskly told, for a change - is essentially required reading says even more. Besides, those summaries only go so far. I've played and finished both previous numbered entries, as well as PSP spin-off Birth By Sleep and Dream Drop Distance on 3DS, and still I was left flummoxed at times. On more than one occasion I paused a cutscene to look up a wiki because someone had referred to a name or a plot development I couldn't recall.
