Taking the Mystery Out of Murder- A Couple of Dumbbells

In this episode of The Brain Food Show, we start by looking at how exactly Al Capone got the scars that got him the nickname “Scarface”.

Moving on to the meat of today’s episode, we jump into the rather interesting story behind one of the many so called “trial of the century” of the 20th century.  In this case involving a housewife and her lover and their plot to murder her husband. We also discuss the case of the first woman ever to be executed in an electric chair and one of the most iconic journalistic photos ever taken.

In the Bonus Facts today, we look at the first two women ever to be sentenced to death via the electric chair, what they did to get that sentence, and how they both got off.

On another note, if you could do us a huge favor and rate and review this show in whatever podcasting platform you’re using (including hopefully giving us some feedback related to the new format), we would be extremely grateful. Thanks!

Healthier confectionery

One of the core features for the next edition of Confectionery Production is set to focus on healthier ranges of confectionery hitting shelves around the world.

It’s fair to say there has been something of an explosion of new nutritionally-enhanced snacks and protein bars over the past year or two that have laid down a strong marker for what is possible within the sector.

With consumers demanding an ever-greater array of options for their food, including confectionery, manufacturers have been under pressure to come up with effective solutions for the sector.

One segment that has previously lagged behind somewhat is the chocolate market, which has seen product developers grapple with means of reducing sugar without losing the taste and flavour profiles achieved through traditional bar ranges.

Some observers have doubted whether trying to achieve this with indulgence products is a realistic goal, but to the credit of major companies including Nestle and Mars, reduced sugar alternatives to conventional bar ranges are now emerging.

This past week I enjoyed returning to see the Plamil Foods group in Kent, UK, which has proudly flown the flag for vegan products, and it is now enjoying success with its dairy free chocolate alternative So Free range.

The latest addition to the series is its no added sugar (containing less than 4% sugar) smooth bar product, and the results are very encouraging. While you are aware it’s not dairy, its sweet coconut and pleasant texture have demonstrated that creating ranges that are healthier is entirely possible.

It’s a trend that isn’t going to disappear in a hurry, especially with government pressure being applied on the subject through Public Health England, calling for a 20% cut in sugar within British confectionery by next year.

Pathologic 2 gets a May release date for Steam, and also a bizarre trailer

Godiva Easter range

Snacking company pladis, has launched an Easter range through its premium chocolate brand, Godiva.

The Godiva Bunny is available in milk and dark chocolate variants while Godiva Mini Eggs consist of a selection of eight filled eggs coated in Belgian chocolate. This collection includes Milk Chocolate & Salted Caramel filled, Dark Chocolate & Coconut filled and White Chocolate & Praline filled eggs.

“We already have a strong year-round presence with our core range of Godiva products,” said Sarah Horowitz, director of the new ventures business unit at pladis UK&I. “However, Easter presents a key sales opportunity, with chocolate sales boosted by £292 million in 2018.

“Following strong consumer appetite – and a 3.9% growth – in premium chocolate last year, we’re excited to bring two new luxurious and seasonal products to market in time for Easter 2019.

“What’s more, by offering seasonal products at varying price points, we hope to make premium chocolate accessible to even more consumers.”

Godiva Bunny Milk Chocolate and Dark Chocolate will be available in 100g packs for an RRP of £4.00, while Godiva Mini Eggs will be available in a 90g box of eight eggs for an RRP of £5.00.

Cofresh brings back snacks for Ramadan

Indian snacks manufacturer Cofresh has re-introduced two popular Ramadan products, which this year starts at sunset on 5 May and lasts until sunrise on 4 June.

In keeping with the Muslim tradition of breaking the fasting period with dates – and back by popular demand – the range includes two date-based snacks; the sweet and tasty Arabian Date & Nut Bites (185g) and the Peanut, Date & Coconut Brittle Bites (160g).  Both are high in carbs so deliver a quick burst of energy when required, and come in handy resealable pouches to maintain freshness during Ramadan.

“Ramadan is not only a great time to maximise sales as consumers will be looking for tasty and traditional snacks to enjoy when they gather to celebrate Iftar each evening, but it also represents a major opportunity for retailers to highlight their offering and help them stand out from the multiples while driving their customers’ average spend,” said Debbie King, director of commercial sales & marketing at Cofresh.

“With Indian snacks being the fastest growing taste adventure of choice, retailers can easily capitalise on the increasing demand for bolder, spicier food especially at key selling times such as Ramadan.”
